How can the CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing tool be used to treat obesity?

Started Nov. 23, 2022

Abstract or project description

This research paper will consider applications of the gene editing tool CRISPR/Cas9 to treating obesity. Possible topic to explore include a description of the mechanistic details of the CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing platform and how it achieves edits in human cells. The paper will then explore the molecular mechanisms of obesity, and identify areas where gene editing could be useful for treatment and prevention. The paper can consider direct links between genes and obesity, such as mutations in signaling hormones, as well as less direct links such as subtle changes in metabolism of fat storage. The paper can also compare these approaches with existing methods to treat obesity, including improved diet and exercise, bariatric surgery, or pharmacological interventions. Finally, this paper will include an outlook on the current limitations and most exciting future directions of this area of research.
