Abstract or project description
This project investigates the effectiveness and limitations of two preventive digital authenticity standards, C2PA and the Numbers Protocol, in combating the spread of AI-generated image misinformation on social media platforms. Unlike reactive AI detection tools, which often produce unreliable results, these standards embed or record provenance data at the point of creation. The study compares C2PA’s cryptographic manifest framework with the Numbers Protocol’s blockchain-based system, evaluating their core technologies, tamper prevention, scalability, user adoption, privacy, and cost. By highlighting the trade-offs between centralized and decentralized approaches, the project aims to inform stakeholders about the societal and technical consequences of widespread adoption.
