Examining How Design Features in Genshin Impact Encourage Player Spending

Started Dec. 19, 2023

Abstract or project description

This paper explores Genshin Impact’s success using a design lens. Through an autoethnographic study, we analyze how Genshin Impact’s open-world gameplay, reward systems, and player engagement mechanisms, successfully addresses the psychological needs of Self-Determination Theory (competence, autonomy, and relatedness). In addition, easy access to the game and the soft-selling marketing approach further enhance the game’s appeal. Through these gameplay and marketing aspects, Genshin Impact aims to foster long-term player loyalty.
