What is the efficacy of the various modalities used to treat atrophic acne scars and how does it affect the therapeutic outcome?

Started Sept. 17, 2024

Abstract or project description

Atrophic acne scars are characterized by their sunken/pitted form due to a lack of collagen production that occurs following the genesis of acne. These scars are a challenge that many young adults and their dermatologists face; it not only poses an aesthetic concern, but also negative impacts their quality of life, leading to emotional stress and diminished self esteem. Thus, optimizing treatments to improve the physical appearance of such scars is vital. Currently, there is a plethora of therapeutic modalities, including cosmetic/dermal fillers, chemical peels, laser treatments, non-invasive resurfacing methods, topical treatments, subcision, surgical interventions, and alternative injection therapy. This systematic review aims to analyze the efficiency of these treatment options and how their efficacy changes when combined with other modalities. We will explore the mechanisms within these treatments and leverage existing literature to determine what best treats atrophic acne scars. By finding the strongest therapeutic treatment method, dermatologists and their patients will be better able to improve overall skin texture as well as self esteem in the setting of atrophic acne scarring.
