About

Hello! My name is Claire Casey! My Polygence project is on how a growth mindset affects elementary students' performance in math. I chose this project because I had a fixed mindset about my math abilities throughout elementary school. My belief that I was inherently bad at math negatively affected my grades in math class, and I was only able to start doing well in math class and actually enjoy it once I developed a growth mindset. Through my Polygence project, I want to see if my experience with developing a growth mindset applies to other kids so they can begin to enjoy and succeed in math.

Abstract or project description

Claire is working on a review paper that discusses the impact of a growth vs fixed mindset on elementary students' math success. In her paper, the starts by broadly defining what these two mindsets are and their characteristics. She then goes on to discuss what academic success is and the long-term impact it can have later in life. She then discusses what math anxiety is, where it may stem from, as well as how this affects self-efficacy. She will conclude her paper by discussing some of her suggestions (based on the literature she is reviewing) for best practices for implementing a growth mindset in the classroom.
