Comparative study of zero emissions aircraft in terms of viability and environmental impact

Abstract or project description

The aviation industry, unlike other industries, is predicted to account for both a larger absolute amount and proportion of global greenhouse gas emissions. I investigate potential ways of achieving an aircraft powered by non-fossil fuel energy sources as well as other ways to reduce aviation’s carbon footprint. I propose aircraft powered by batteries, hydrogen, and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and score them in terms of their environmental impact (measured in CO2 equivalents https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php?title=Glossary[...]0the%20same%20global%20warming), their calculated range, and their viability (ability to achieve operating costs within 15% of conventional aircraft on a per seat mile basis).
