Maximizing Vision to Increase Flight Capabilities of UAVs in Inclement Weather

Started Apr. 5, 2022

Abstract or project description

One issue that limits Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) operations is their lack of a dual Infrared (IR)/Visual Capability. By analyzing current systems and their visual instruments, we can determine the cost-effectiveness, efficiency by pound, and most versatile instruments for usage within UAVs. Disaster zones can be notorious for their suboptimal weather, which can reduce response times, impair surveillance, and more. Using the most effective and efficient combinations of IR and visual sensors, we can create a system that can briefly take over for a pilot so that the pilot doesn’t have to handle flying in inclement weather. The system should also be able to continue to perform its mission following the transition from manual to autonomous control.
