Formula 1 Aerodynamics Study - 2022 Technical Regulations

Started Nov. 14, 2024

Abstract or project description

Formula One is a unique sport, especially due to its constantly evolving, and specific technical regulations. In 2014, the sport transitioned from naturally aspirated V8 engines to 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 hybrid motors, featuring the introduction of the ERS (Energy Recovery System). This major change marked the end of Red Bull Racing's dominance and the beginning of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas era. Mercedes won eight consecutive Constructors' Championships — the longest streak in Formula One history — dominating nearly every aspect of competition. They dominated up until 2021. However, in 2022, another major regulatory shift occurred, this time focused on the aerodynamic bases of the sport. Ground effect aerodynamics and new aerodynamic profiles were introduced, forcing teams to adapt significantly, and extremely quickly. This made Mercedes struggle under new rules, while Red Bull returned to their years of dominance. This project examines how modifications in technical regulations lead to eras of dominance between different teams. Focusing on Mercedes AMG decline specifically. Hypothesis: Did the 2022 aerodynamic regulation changes, including alterations to airfoil shapes and the reintroduction of ground-effect aerodynamics, contribute to the decline of Mercedes-AMG Petronas and the resurgence of Red Bull Racing?
