About

Hello! My name is Anvika Chandagari and my project is on the associations between externalizing mental disorders and violent criminal behavior. I chose to work on this project because I have always been fascinated by criminology and psychology, particularly what motivates people to behave the way they do and what factors influence these behaviors. I believe we need a deeper understanding of the minds of the incarcerated to properly address these issues and create a safer world for everyone, while also preventing discrimination against individuals with mental disorders to build a more equal society. With my project complete, I am working towards publishing my paper in a well-renowned journal.

Asssociations between externalizing psychological disorders and violent criminal behavior

Started July 17, 2024

Abstract or project description

This project will explore possible relationships between mental illness, specifically externalizing disorders such as ASPD or conduct disorder, and violent criminal behavior. The student plans to conduct an independent research project that includes qualitative interviews with experts in the field, such as criminal lawyers, criminologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, etc. The student will analyze certain crminalistic behaviors that are often associated with violent crimes and externalized disorders that also share these behaviors. The student will also analyze the stigma tied to these externalized disorders and whether or not there acctually is a correlation between criminal activity and mental disorders or if that is just a concept that has been deeply ingrained in society.
