Abstract or project description
This literature review investigates how childhood trauma changes brain development and affects children’s emotional regulation, academics, and risk of disorders such as ADHD and PTSD. Existing research has shown that trauma disrupts key brain regions, including the amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex while also changing stress hormones like cortisol. However, the connections between early trauma, early puberty, and later difficulties in learning and self-regulation have gaps. To address these gaps, my literature review analyzes neuroscientific and psychological studies on trauma’s biological and behavioral impacts. This paper identifies patterns in reshaping neural pathways, emotional dysregulation, and overlapping symptoms with disorders like ADHD. Some studies also show childhood trauma embedded into the brain, having long-lasting fear responses, which can lead to struggles in academic and social settings. Brain plasticity and the potential of early interventions such as trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy can prevent long-term harm. Trauma research helps underline the urgency of early detection and support. This has a goal to highlight methods that caregivers and educators can use for further recovery in children.
