Housing Inequality and Homelessness in New York City: Wealth, Policy, and Lived Experience

Started Dec. 26, 2025

Abstract or project description

Alexander’s project examines housing inequality and homelessness in New York City, focusing on why severe housing insecurity persists in one of the wealthiest cities in the world. The research explores the relationship between wealth concentration, housing policy, and access to stable housing, using New York City as a focused case study. The project is grounded in economic and social science perspectives and will rely primarily on secondary data such as government reports, housing affordability metrics, and academic literature. Where appropriate, the project may incorporate limited and ethical primary research to add lived-experience context. Overall, the project aims to help readers better understand how structural inequality manifests through housing systems and why policy responses often fall short.
