About

Hello! My name is Aarav Rishi and my project is on intrinsic self-healing materials. I chose to work on this project because I wanted to explore different ways in which self-healing materials could be used in a variety of different industries. After my project is complete, I would like to fabricate my own-self healing material one day.

Abstract or project description

My project focuses on intrinsic self-healing materials, a branch of new materials (based on the biological systems' ability to repair themselves) that attempts to bridge the gap between the long-standing problem of mechanical strength and regenerative capabilities; in essence, as materials get stronger, they lose the effectiveness of their self-healing properties. I start out the paper by explaining why it is necessary to shift towards these unique types of materials, especially in this day and age, as modern materials no longer provide the durability and sense of safety that they used to.

This research paper focuses on a few solutions that can potentially solve this problem including vitrimers, Diels-Alder reactions, hydrogen bonds, and a dual-network (joint) system. In-depth, I explain the components and individual advantages of each and how they can be applied to real world problems and industries in our world today. I finish the paper by focusing on the future outlook of intrinsic self-healing materials
