I completed my research paper analyzing Florida boating accidents from 2015–2024, created graphs and maps to show the trends I found, and interviewed an FWC boating-safety lieutenant to better understand how accidents are reported. I then used my findings on operator inattention to develop a working boat-to-boat proximity-alert prototype using ESP32 microcontrollers, GPS, Wi-Fi, and LoRa communication. During my internship with Digital Communications Technologies, I improved the device, tested location tracking, and learned how to use APIs and GPS software. I also created plans for a companion phone application that would display nearby boats and send vibration alerts. Finally, I presented my work to boating-safety professionals, submitted my paper to research programs, and shared the project through the Lucy Fernandez Foundation, bLU CREW, and the National Safe Boating Council.

Summary
This study investigates behavioral and demographic factors associated with recreational boating accidents in Florida from 2015 to 2024. Using a retrospective analysis of Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) boating accident reports and annual statistical summaries, the study examines trends in operator age, boater education, and contributing factors such as operator inattention, alcohol use, excessive speed, and operator inexperience. Data were systematically extracted and organized to identify recurring patterns in boating accidents over time. Particular attention was given to the relationship between operator inattention, operators aged 50 years and older, and the prevalence of formal boater education among accident-involved individuals. The findings suggest that operator inattention remains a leading contributing factor in Florida boating accidents and that older operators are disproportionately represented in reported incidents. These results may help inform future boating safety initiatives, targeted educational programs, and evidence-based strategies aimed at reducing preventable boating accidents throughout Florida.
