Summary

Organ transplantation is a critical medical intervention for patients suffering from end-stage organ failure, with liver and kidney transplants being among the most common procedures. This review paper examines the factors contributing to the significantly higher costs associated with liver transplants than kidney transplants in the United States. As of 2020, the average price of a kidney transplant was approximately $442,500, while a liver transplant averaged around $878,400. The disparity in costs is attributed to several factors, including the complexity of the liver transplant procedure, extensive pre-operative evaluations, and prolonged post-operative care, which includes higher rates of complications and more expensive immunosuppressive regimens. This paper further explores regional variations in transplant costs, the impact of living donor procedures, and the role of insurance coverage in mitigating financial burdens. Living donor transplants can reduce long-term costs for kidney procedures, although initial expenses may be higher due to donor-related care. The evolving landscape of transplant policies and technological advancements also plays a crucial role in shaping cost dynamics. By understanding the multifaceted nature of transplant expenses, this review aims to provide insights for healthcare policymakers and transplant centres on managing and potentially reducing the costs associated with liver transplantation while ensuring high standards of patient care. Ultimately, the findings seek to enhance the accessibility and affordability of these life-saving procedures, improving patient outcomes and healthcare resource allocation.
