ReSettle: an antimicrobial UV-curable nail gel for immunocompromised patients

Project's result

I wrote a research paper detailing the issue of artificial nails cultivating green nail infections in immunocompromised patients as well as my proposed material that would combat those infections. I designed an engineering experimentation plan that could be run to determine the feasibility of creating a UV-curable gel using silver phosphate glass. Additionally, I designed a website that provides an overview on my product and self-publishes my paper. I also presented at the 2026 Polygence Symposium.

They started it from zero. Are you ready to level up with us?

Summary

ReSettle is a business concept designed to provide nail service options to recovering chemotherapy patients by developing safer nail products. I found that getting their nails done after chemotherapy felt like a step closer to normal for many patients who previously got their nails done, but cancer patients are strongly advised not to get artificial gel nails after their last treatment. The number one reason for that is microbial infections caused by trapped moisture under the artificial nails. Infections in immunocompromised patients, like recovering cancer patients, can easily be fatal. Hence, my project is designing a UV-curable interface layer integrated with silver phosphate glass that would go between the natural nail and the gel adhesive. I am researching the ingredients that would work with the glass and provide the best balance of antimicrobial activity, flexibility, adhesion, optical clarity, and safety. Overall, my project, ReSettle, delves into the possibility of creating a product to reduce microbial infections in immunocompromised patients to aid their recovery process.

Project review

“Although my project challenged me in many ways I couldn't expect, I am grateful I had the opportunity to work around those obstacles and strengthen my research skills. I reviewed existing papers on silver phosphate glass, UV-curable methacrylate, and antimicrobial dental restoration materials to formulate a brand new material that could be used for nail services. Additionally, I integrated my interest in business into this project by designing a website. Overall, I had a wonderful and fulfilling experience with my project.”

About my mentor

“Kelly was an excellent mentor! She always had great insight to offer on my project, and she was a fantastic guide throughout the entire process. Also, her advice helped me achieve the goals and outcomes I hoped for from this program.”
