Investigating Synchronized, Spatially Matched Multisensory Feedback Integrated with Neural Prosthetic Motor Control to Reduce Phantom Limb Distortions

Project's result

I completed a narrative review exploring how sensory feedback and motor control may shape embodiment in neuroprosthetics. From the studies I reviewed, I also developed my own framework for future neuroprosthetic design and created figures to show how factors like timing, cue reliability, and personalization may work together.

They started it from zero. Are you ready to level up with us?

Summary

I investigated how multisensory feedback could help neuroprosthetic limbs feel less like external devices and more like part of the body. Through a focused review of published studies, I examined how timing, sensory reliability, spatial mapping, and motor control influence prosthetic embodiment and phantom limb distortions. I found that synchronized sensory feedback can strengthen embodiment and reduce some distortions, while exact anatomical matching may not always be necessary for the brain to integrate artificial sensations. I also examined how sensory feedback and voluntary motor control interact, finding that both can contribute to embodiment, although the benefits of combining them remain uncertain. I used these findings to propose an evidence-informed framework for future neuroprostheses that better connects movement, sensation, and the brain’s perception of the body.

Project review

“This project challenged me to move beyond summarizing research and think more critically about how evidence can inform future neuroprosthetic design. I especially enjoyed developing my own framework from the literature while learning to be more precise about what the studies actually support.”

About my mentor

“My mentor was supportive, approachable, and always willing to answer questions with patience and clarity. She provided thoughtful guidance that made learning both encouraging and enjoyable.”
