ArthriTrack: Redefining Arthritis Care from Home

Project's result

Developed a mobile prototype of ArthriTrack in React Native, Created UI/UX wireframes and design mockups in Figma, Built and connected a Nest.js backend with a SQL database, Presented the project at the Polygence Symposium of Rising Scholars. Began research and hardware prototyping for NeuraScan, a smart glove for arthritis diagnostics!

Summary

ArthriTrack is a mobile app designed to help people with arthritis, like my grandma, Jan, better manage and track their symptoms from home. The app allows users to log pain levels, monitor hand mobility, receive real-time feedback, and access personalized exercise recommendations.

To build ArthriTrack, I learned the three core components of app development:

  • Frontend/UI/UX: Designed in Figma and developed using React Native for both iOS and Android, with a focus on simplicity and accessibility for older users.
  • Backend & APIs: Built with Nest.js to manage the app’s logic and communication between systems.
  • Database (SQL): Used to store user data such as pain logs, exercise plans, and health metrics.

Looking ahead, I have continued developing NeuraScan, a smart glove that measures grip strength, range of motion, joint plaque, and heart rate. Once integrated with ArthriTrack, it will enable real-time tracking and personalized care recommendations, helping users predict and prevent arthritis flare-ups.

What began as a way to help my grandma has evolved into a mission to empower millions living with arthritis by making care more personalized, accessible, and data-driven.

Project review

“This project was incredibly meaningful to me because it combined my interests in computer science and healthcare with a personal motivation, helping my grandma manage her arthritis. Through designing and developing ArthriTrack, I gained hands-on experience in full-stack app development, data management, and user-centered design. Most importantly, I learned how technology can make a tangible difference in people’s quality of life.”

About my mentor

“I was fortunate to have a very supportive, articulate and knowledgeable mentor. Jamie guided me through the technical aspects of the project as well as the different ways to approach creating the app. He helped me understand the 3 main components of app development, improved my code efficiency, and designed a clear project plan.”
