Summary

UV radiation has been proven to damage the skin due to its ability to penetrate through the skin’s layers, subsequently leading to loss of skin elasticity and skin cancers. Therefore, people have used sunscreens since medieval times to reduce UV radiation damage and protect their skin. Nowadays, sunscreen is widely used, not only to prevent sunburn but also for skin cancer prevention and other skin conditions related to UV exposure. Due to growing concerns about the chemicals in commercial sunscreen products, many people prefer using natural alternatives to minimize the potential risks associated with long-term use. This research paper aims to produce a natural sunscreen cream combining agarwood and aloe vera as the two main ingredients. These two ingredients have each alone been reported to have an accepted level of protection from sun rays and provide a more affordable option for communities with local access to agarwood and aloe vera. However, there is currently no research paper investigating the combination of the ingredients. Thus, collecting the ingredients for homemade products can provide a more affordable sunscreen.

Hi! My name is Chau Mai Khoi, and I’m an 11th-grade student from Nha Trang City, Vietnam. I would like to work on a research project about the development of a natural sunscreen capsule made from aloe vera and agarwood extracts. Living in a tropical country, I understand how intense sun exposure can damage the skin. That is why I want to do this project, especially to help women in my community. After completing the project, I would like to share the idea with people in my community and strengthen my academic profile for future college applications.

Project review

“This is my first time working on creating cosmetic products, but with my mentor's guidance on formulations and methods, not only do I learn how to conduct trials and take notes, but I also produce products with promising results. Although there are limitations at the end when I am unable to find affordable testing labs, I am continuously intrigued to work on the project in the future when I actually enter the industry. In addition, it's very helpful for me to take advantage of the writing feedback, which helps me understand and prepare well for academic and research writing (for example, citations, references, writing tone, and flow). These are aspects that truly exceeded my expectations.”

About my mentor

“My mentor was very supportive and easy to work with. She is a great listener and always makes me feel comfortable sharing my ideas and struggles. She guided me through experiments, provided helpful resources like research papers at the beginning, and gave constructive feedback on my writing, citations and formulation process.”
