Hi! I'm Jack. I'm a 5th year Bioengineering PhD student at Upenn and my research is in cancer immunology. My main research projects are finding cancer-specific T cells in patient tumors and benchmarking single cell technologies. In my free time I love to be active. I love running, working out, and taking my dog Cody on walks and hikes. I also like exploring the city with friends.Project ideas
The alphabet soup of immunology
Immunology is an alphabet soup of markers. CD3, CD4, CD8, CD19, CCR7, CD45RA, etc. are all common markers used to identify certain immune cells in flow cytometry. Together we will learn how to analyze primary research articles and how to put together a literature review on immune cell subsets and the accepted markers that define them.
The future of cancer treatments
First generation cancer treatments were largely chemotherapies that targeted DNA replication as cancerous cells were replicating more frequently than healthy. In recent decades, new generation cancer therapies have become more targeted using protein markers identified to be presented on the tumor surface or the infusion of cellular therapies. Together we will learn how to write a literature review on the history of cancer treatments, the present standard of care, and the therapies of the future and the hurdles involved.
