Bio

I am originally from Colombia but have lived in the United States since I was 2, growing up and witnessing first-hand my parents' experiences integrating into a new society inspired my academic interests in immigration and world politics. My current interests include climate migration, citizenship, and the African Diaspora. I also love looking at popular culture- especially reality television- through a sociological lens. I could talk about the migration politics of 90 day fiancé all day!

Project ideas

Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.

Pop Culture & Politics

We could explore the relationship between popular culture and politics, including political representations in pop culture and how they intersect with issues of race, gender, ad sexuality. After choosing the particular topic, we can will read and discuss the sociological literature then develop a research question, choose the methodology, and conduct research that culminates in a conference paper, academic journal article, or think piece.

Contemporary topics in citizenship

For this project, we'd read and discuss topics about citizenship including the rights and duties that come with such a status, who is allowed to be a citizen, who isn't, what is statelessness, what does it mean for those who experience it, and what privileges are afforded to those who have certain citizenships? Depending on your individual interests, this could culminate in traditional research paper or Op-ed, or alternatively in a more creative endeavor like an educational video or a podcast.

Teaching experience

I currently teach at a top liberal arts college in the northeast and have previously served as a graduate teaching assistant at my alma mater, the University of Notre Dame, for courses on world politics and globalization in Africa.
