Bio

Hi, I am Janice! I am a first year MD/PhD student at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. I am very excited to start my training as a physician scientist. I studied biomedical engineering both in undergrad (City College) and master's (Columbia University). I joined a cardiovascular lab at undergrad, investigating mechanotransduction in cancer metastasis. My graduate research was in an immunology lab studying Kawasaki disease and other diseases involving immune dysfunction such as multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children. My training as a biomedical engineer and graduate research experience in immunology allows me to develop a unique perspective on approaching scientific problems. I am motivated to acquire a lens that combines physician and scientist perspectives. Outside of the lab, I enjoy watching movies, baking, and travel. As a first-generation college student, I have received generous help along the way. I would love to share my experience and serve as a mentor to a new generation of aspiring scholars.

Project ideas

Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.

Bioartificial heart/blood vessels/liver/kidney posters

You will learn the anatomy and physiology of the organ of your interest; compare the pros and cons of current designs; brainstorm your design and research plans.

Cancer research

You can pick a topic of your interest (e.g. certain type of cancer) and write a review article on the physiology, recent advances (e.g. immune therapy, nanoparticles for drug delivery etc) in treating this cancer.

Biomaterial designs

You can pick a topic of your interest (e.g. degradable sutures, dental implants, hip prostheses) and learn more about how the biochemical and mechanical properties are taken into account in material design.

Coding skills

Python, Matlab

Languages I know

Chinese

Teaching experience

I’ve tutored high school students in math, chemistry, and biology. I also mentor lowerclassmen in college.
