Bio

Although officially a mechanical engineer, I am a self-proclaimed roboticist with a focus in design thinking. I currently work as a manager at a large B2B industrial supply company. During my time in school I helped develop a patent-pending ankle prosthesis, helped establish the first intercollegiate exoskeleton competition in the world, worked for the robotic surgery division of Stryker, and won top junior in University of Michigan engineering. I enjoy scuba diving, snow-sports, party-style video games, and ring making.

Project ideas

Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.

Robotic Control Systems:

In this application-based project, you will explore how Position, Integral, Derivative or PID control works using an Arduino microcontroller and a DC Motor with an encoder. The final deliverable will be a paper detailing the theory of each type of control and your how your experimental results compare to this theory. Previous background in C or C++ would help but is not required. A strong background in high school-level math and physics is important for ease of understanding.

Design Thinking:

In this theoretical project you will explore the basis of design thinking. You will learn what skills and practices differentiate novice and expert designers. You will write a review style research paper discussing best practices during the design process.

Design Practice:

In this application-based project, you will explore the best practices of front-end design. You will select and important design problem and spend your time developing solutions to that problem. Your final deliverable will be a written design report or a semi-functional prototype explaining/demonstrating your process and proposed solution with evidence and data you have collected.

Business Product Analysis

In this project you will complete a case study of a specific product from a business of your choice. You will leverage different analytical techniques and explore business strategy as a whole to understand and engage with the working world around you. We will also explore professional development activities to ensure your post-high school career development is off to a good start. The end result would be a written/digital form of documentation summarizing the product you chose and musing on potential improvements.

Teaching experience

My first position was as a philosophy TA for a semester. I graded work and helped students solidify knowledge through creative review such as an act-it-out session. Next, I became an engineering tutor for a year. I held supplementary instruction sessions in which I distilled class knowledge into smaller chunks and provided example problems for guided practice. Finally, I ended up instructing mechanical robotics design courses for the past year. I worked with lab sections of about 20 students and mentored teams in those sections through technical and design skills toward a functional robot for a class competition. I now work full-time at an industrial supply company as a manager. I have completed several projects to improve our operational efficiency and ensure proper development of my team.

Reviews

"Leo is an amazing mentor, when I started I had no idea what I wanted to work on and he was excited to help me with anything I could think of. He taught me a lot of valuable techniques that you only get after working in college or in an engineering job which has helped a lot not only in this project. He also was extremely flexible with things such as meeting dates and times."

Keshav from San Jose, CA

"Leo was helpful and gave me a lot of tips on my project and even college. He also encouraged me to conduct an interview with an expert even though I wasn't really confident about it."
