Bio

Hello everyone! My name is Asa and I am a printed circuit board qualification engineer at IBM and have been with IBM a total of 2.5 years (6 months full time, 2 years part time in grad school). I graduated from Duke with my Masters of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science. While in graduate school I focused on using machine learning methods to discover new ways to find materials called metallic glasses. I really enjoy any projects that can incorporate physical design as well as machine learning and software applications. In my free time I enjoy flying drones and working on my hobby projects that often involve 3d printing and board design. My active hobbies include playing soccer and riding scooters. I enjoy travelling and I hope to visit 50 countries before I turn 50. I look forward to working with you! :)

Project ideas

Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.

Develop a Systematic way to Classify 3d printing Parameters using Machine Learning

I have been 3d printing for about 4 years and have used it to complete many personal projects for myself and to help others. This project idea comes from the fact that there are hundreds of parameters to set when thinking of beginning a 3d print. It is very difficult to know how much changing one parameter will effect the quality of your print. Your project could help with this! It would be beneficial to have a formulaic way of knowing the impact of changing a parameter without doing test prints. You will learn the physics behind fused deposition modeling 3d printing and the major parameters that effect different outcomes of a print.

Develop an Administrative Healthcare Application to Decrease Patient Wait Time

I have been creating small scale applications for about 5 years now in python as well as web based applications for small user groups at IBM. IBM being involved in so many fields, one field we are exposed to is the medical field and some of the inefficiencies in it. One of these being patient throughput due to administrative tasks. This project aims to provide a comprehensive solution for managing patient records, appointments, billing, and other administrative tasks It will involve designing a user-friendly application with a focus on usability. The student will perform market research, interviews with potential end users, and explore the intricacies of UI/UX design. Students will learn about the Design Thinking Process Flow, while gaining valuable insight about HIPPA and the health care field.
