Bio

Hi! I'm Anthony (Tony for short), and I grew up in Texas. I did my undergraduate degree at the University of Chicago, with a major in Classical Studies. I then went on to Harvard University, where I earned an MA and a PhD in Classical Archaeology. I have worked on archaeological excavations in Turkey and the UK, and I was lucky enough to spend a year in Germany during my PhD work. My core interests focus on how memory of the past influences how we act as citizens of our global and local societies. In my research, I look at how public spaces were designed and decorated with the aim of performing citizenship by preserving the memory of past lives and inspiring others to act in a manner that benefits their community. When teaching, I enjoy helping students discover meaning in the mundane, and how the world has been shaped by the actions of people, regardless of motivation or scale.

Project ideas

Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.

Historical Podcast

Create a podcast based on your research of the life of a historical figure or historical object (e.g., book, museum artifact), or some other topic you're interested in.

Reading the Classics

Guided reading of literary or historical texts from antiquity or from 18th or 19th century America. Examples could be reading the Greek and Roman biographies, the speeches of Lincoln and Douglass, or ancient or modern poetry.

Epistolary history

Creative historical writing project inspired by the ancient letters of Pliny and Cicero, epistolary novels like The Ides of March by Thornton Wilder, and the documentary films of Ken Burns. Write a series of letters between historical figures that detail the events, thoughts, and concerns leading up to, during, and in the aftermath of historical events, and present them in either written or podcast format. Examples include the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, the Battles of Actium, Marathon, or Gettysburg, or Sack of Troy.
