What Makes a Doctor’s Visit Run Smoothly? Exploring Efficiency in Outpatient Clinics

This project will introduce students to how outpatient clinics (also called ambulatory care) work behind the scenes to keep patient visits running on time. The student will explore questions like: What are the key steps in a patient’s visit from arrival to departure? What can cause delays during a visit (e.g., late arrivals, overbooked schedules, provider running behind)? How do healthcare teams try to improve the experience for patients and staff? The student can learn by: Observing workflows (if possible) or interviewing clinic staff about their roles (virtually or through summaries) Creating a simple flowchart of a typical clinic visit Reviewing mock or sample data (like number of patients per day or appointment types) to look for patterns Proposing a small improvement idea (e.g., better signage, patient reminders, schedule changes) Skills and Takeaways: Learn how healthcare operations support patient care Practice organizing and summarizing information Think critically about real-world problem solving Gain exposure to how large healthcare systems . Skills- Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Basic Tableau

Teaching experience

I have tutored and mentored students through City Year, which is a non-profit program through Americorps. I served as a mentor in an underserved community in Los Angeles. I had a group of six kids, who were freshman in High School and were responsible to track their progress throughout their first year of high school. Most of these kids tested below proficient when they were tested initially, and by the end of the year all of them tested advanced/proficient with my help. It was a unique experience and I hope to utilize my mentoring skills with you.
