Bio

Hello! My name is Veronica, and I've spent two years working on power electronics research for my MS degree. I am now working on intense laser-matter interactions for my PhD dissertation, but throughout my time in school, I have found a real passion in understanding ~why~ we are building these technologies, for whom, and how each innovation will impact others. In my free time, I enjoy heading to the theaters to catch the latest films, playing tennis, and trying out new recipes. I like to bake, but overall my favorite snack is popcorn. I'm a big Giants baseball fan, and of course for any college sport I root for my alma mater UC Davis and current school Univ. of Michigan. Go Blue!

Project ideas

Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.

Analyzing Enforcement for Automated Vehicles

As automated vehicles become more prevalent in our society today, it is becoming more crucial to understand how we will enforce our current traffic laws and norms when there are driverless cars. The aim of this project would be to master an understanding of the types of automated vehicles, as defined by the SAE, and then perform a literature review of current ideas to enforce automated vehicles when they are on the roads. If time allows, the student can also suggest their own enforcement mechanism for AVs.

A review on achieving fusion ignition

There are many ways that researchers can attack the nuclear fusion question. Researchers are working on ways to achieve ignition through lasers, magnetic confinement, and more! The aim of this project would be to analyze the types of methods being used by the national labs as well as startups in the field to analyze their methods to achieving ignition and report on the status of their approach.

A review on high-energy / high-power lasers across the globe

With so many petawatt class lasers popping up in Europe, Asia, and here in the United States, one might wonder what types of experiments might be performed at each of these laser facilities. This project will dive into the capabilities of each laser system as well as the types of experiments that can be performed using such a system.
