Bio
I am passionate about social science research and finding out what things work the way they are, utilizing numbers and statistics. I have experience in generating ideas/hypothesis, writing grant proposals, building survey questionnaires, coding and data analysis, writing reports and disseminating the outcome. I have published over 40+ papers in peer-reviewed journals. I have been working in various industries (high tech, media, food science as well as financial services) as a data analyst/data scientist for the past 15 years, and have a curtesy research appointment with a flagship state university continuing paper-writing on academic ideas. In my spare time, I love to read, watch movies, and to volunteer with various local organizations. I enjoy mentoring young people and have some success in this area.Project ideas
Designing a survey and completing a research project.
In this project, you will design a research project that can be completed by yourself. You can gather data digitally, and present that data as either a scientific poster or talk. You will learn about the scientific process, how to construct appropriate figures for your data, and how to communicate your results in a formal presentation. For example, you noticed that people have different opinion towards COVID-19. You wonder, are there any differences between different genders, age groups, regions and self-identified religious beliefs on their views on COVID-19? What would likely to be predicative of whether a gathering would have people in attendance wearing masks? You can design a survey, describe the scenarios and ask your respondents' opinions, along with their demographic info. The final work product could be a poster, a research paper, or a power point deck for presentation.
Story Telling with Data Visualization
There are many data visualization tools out there, some are free. Tableau, PowerBI or Google Studio, what ever you choose, I can teach you to link the data you want and make beautiful graphs/charts/maps to tell stories with data. You don't know where you can get data on the subjects you are interested? We can explore together. There are public data we can get for free (open government data, public agency data, data science training data and etc.)
Excel skills
Even though there are a lot of fancy analysis tools out there, Excel is still very important, and it provides a starting point to understand more advanced skills. We all want to be more efficient in excel. If you have a question and the spreadsheet, I can show you how to use Excel to get the answer.
Storytelling
Do you love to hear stories? You must have been told children's stories when you were young. You also read about Greek legends when in school. Have you heard about a personal story that move you deeply? There are all kinds of stories and story telling resources out there and I can help you find those and improve your story telling skills. You can generate an specific idea (i.e. you have a volunteering opportunity comping up to entertain folks in a nursing home, what would like to bring with you, would they enjoy listening to stories, what kind, how to deliver?)
