Bio
My name is Gabby and I work as an Occupational Therapist (OT) at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. I received my Master's Degree in OT after graduating from the University of Michigan with a major in Movement Science (also known as kinesiology) and a minor in Community Action and Social Change. As an OT at an educational institution, my job involves a mix of working with patients, completing clinical research, and teaching/mentoring graduate students. I love everything about my job and I'm excited to be able to share some of that with you! Originally from South Florida, winters in the midwest were something I was not ready for. Despite the cold, I love spending my free time outside running, hiking, golfing, gardening, or going on walks with my dog. When the weather is not as nice, I spend time inside reading books that will give me a deeper understanding of public health or social issues that affect communities around the world. Of course, I also love the occasional TV or movie binge and I love watching football in the fall. In the near future, I hope to go back to school for my PhD in public health and pursue a career in health policy.Project ideas
Patient Case Simulation
Explore 2-3 case-based patient scenarios which will involve a review of their medical history, treatments, and plans for discharging home from the hospital. This project will focus on learning about what factors might influence a person's ability to live at home independently following an injury/illness and ways to evaluate/treat them from the rehabilitation standpoint. This will involve researching into different conditions and critical thinking of how someone's personal or environmental factors may influence their health outcomes and how to problem solve through those difficulties.
Community Wellness Campaign
Choose a disease or illness of interest to you (Dementia, Stroke, COVID, etc) and explore ways you might be able to fight this/bring awareness to it in your community or another community of interest. For this project you would go through all the steps of planning and implementing a public health initiative- from exploring ways you would fund it, how to effectively implement it, and how you would measure it's effectiveness.
Let's Write About It
With so many things going on in the world today, there's a lot to talk about and think about. Choose a public health or medical topic that interests you (ex: gun violence, COVID-19 health inequity, the winter storms in Texas) which will be the center of your project. We will walk through the steps as if it were a research project you were doing in college. From the first steps of literature review, to the final steps of presenting your project in the form of a paper, blog, presentation, etc. The goal of this project is to gain a greater understanding of an issue while also preparing you for college-level research projects.
