PhD candidate at University of Michigan - Ann Arbor

Designing, engineering, and testing cancer immunotherapies, biological and bioengineering research

Hello! My name is Ashley, and I am an Immunology PhD student at the University of Michigan studying the use of cancer immunotherapies in different contexts. My work is at the intersection of immunology, cancer biology, bioengineering, and computational biology. My background is in biological engineering, and I'm passionate about translational research that seeks to improve patient outcomes. I am well-versed in scientific communication, and look forward to working with students interested in life sciences, medicine, and engineering. Outside of the lab, I am a life-long athlete. I love spending time outdoors and exploring new cities!

Project ideas

Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.

Multimedia explanation of CAR-T

Although CAR-T therapy has shown promising results and has been approved by the FDA, many patients are yet unaware of what CAR-T therapy is and how it could help them. This project could be a multimedia (blog, website, slideshow, video, etc) way to explain CAR-T therapy to the non-scientist.

Understanding the role of Protein X in Disease Y

Review papers are a great way to synthesize information about a given subject. Focusing on the student's disease of choice, we would work to summarize existing literature and analyze where the field currently stands. We will also identify key areas that need continued innovations.

Specific Aims Page

For a given hypothesis, we will work to craft a specific aims page detailing the experiments needed to support or disprove the hypothesis. We will focus on experimental flow, anticipating setbacks, and experimental design.

Coding skills

Python, Matlab, R, scRNA-seq analysis

Languages I know

Spanish, Intermediate

Teaching experience

I have been tutoring for 6 years. In the past year, I have tutored over 300 hours, working with middle school, high school, and college-aged students. I also mentor several students in a university research setting.
