Bio
My name is Avila and I obtained my M.D from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 2025! I love mentoring in medical science including pre-med prerequisites, Social Determinants of Health, and the Social Sciences. I have tutored many students over the years in various science subjects, as well as in Public Health. I have a passion for improving healthcare for all. I conducted a research project during medical school on implicit bias education and how we can improve patient outcomes through early education. I have experience in providing healthcare for underrepresented communities and educating in medical literacy. Outside of my professional career I am a Pokémon enthusiast. I was the runner up in the 2015 Pokémon Trading Card Game National championship and keep up with the game to this day. When not at work I am most likely to be found at my local MMA gym. I have been competing in combat sports since I was a child and is something I will continue to pursue until father time retires my ability to participate.Project ideas
Design a Community Outreach Program (Medicine/Social Sciences)
There are many underserved communities in healthcare. Utilizing my experience in organizing and running outreach events such as breast cancer awareness events, workshops, and more you will plan, and execute a community outreach program. Through this process you will learn how to plan an event, learn to network and reach out to community leaders, and troubleshoot unforeseen problems. Finishing this project entails with data collection of the event or write a review article of the benefit of your event.
Food insecurity and Academic Success (Social Sciences)
How would your academic performance be affected if you were constantly wondering when you were going to eat next? This is a reality for many students across the country. Conducting an extensive literature review and analyzing local food access will provide an insight to food security and academic success. Results of the literature review will be formalized into a research paper and shared with local legislators at an advocacy event to promote food security in my local community.
