Bio

Hi, my name is Dr. Sarah Singer. I love the sciences (especially biology) and dance, and hope to share my passions with you. I'm a dentist, and can teach you way more than you ever knew about your teeth. Did you know your oral health affects your risk of diabetes and heart disease? I'm excited to get to know you and work on an interesting project together!

Project ideas

Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.

Social Determinants of Oral Health

There are so many ways our oral health affects our lives, and vice versa. This project is a marriage of sociology and dentistry, and studies the way our oral health both impacts and is impacted by our social surroundings. In this project, the student will create a presentation of their studies to educate different groups on the importance of oral health, and the fallacies of our current healthcare system.

History of Hip Hop Dance

This project will be a combination of studying the history of different hip hop dance styles and active hip hop dance instruction. The student will use dance as a vector for learning more about cultural expression. After delving into the meaning behind different hip hop practices, the student will create a dance routine that combines many styles, and in turn celebrates many cultures.

Oral Microbiology

In this project, the student studies the over 700 types of microscopic species - both beneficial and detrimental - that inhabit our oral cavities. The student will write an extensive research paper discovering what remains to be done to couple microbiology with treatment mechanisms.

Biothics in the COVID-19 Era

The student will use traditional ethics principles to examine recent bioethical issues in the time of the current COVID-19 pandemic. The student will write a research paper outlining new ethical dilemmas in this unprecedented situation.

Reviews

"Sarah was a spectacular mentor! As a fellow dancer, she was able to understand how much the topic of Dance Science meant to me, and was able to be on the same page as me. She guided and supported me throughout this whole journey and pointed me in the right direction when I got stuck. She was just as thrilled as I was when I successfully published my blog and continued to be engaged and dedicated to my project the whole time. I am so lucky to have this amazing person as my mentor!"

Aria from Moraga, CA

"I had a wonderful experience in this program with Sarah. She has helped me a lot throughout this process, and I'm confident that I'll be able to write more literature reviews in the future from the experience I've gained through my project. She taught me a lot about the gut microbiome and I'm hoping to expand my knowledge on this subject in college. She provided me with a lot of resources that helped me to effectively learn about my subject."
