Bio

I'm a PhD population health scientist and quantitative methodologist. My area of focus is public health and medicine. I'm particularly interested in health disparities, maternal and child health, health economics, and demography. I've published over 85 academic journal articles in leading publications including the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA Internal Medicine, and Health Affairs. I'm excited to work with bright students to help formulate an important research question that has a clear research gap and then help fill that gap! When I'm not conducting academic research, I'm spending time with my family and writing children's books.

Project ideas

Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.

Food Insecurity in the US

Nationally, approximately 13% of households were food insecure. These households were uncertain of having or unable to acquire enough food to meet the needs of all their members because they had insufficient money or other resources for food. Among children, approximately one in five experienced food insecurity. The Current Population Survey, an annual nationally representative survey conducted by the US Census, ascertains the food security status of the children in the household in the past 30 days based on 8 child food security food security questions. This study would calculate the prevalence and correlates of food insecurity and its constituent components. This study is very publishable as it focuses on children and a widening gap in social safety net services.

Financial Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic substantially affected the US economy. Recovery and relief efforts helped support the US economy during and after the pandemic. However, workers in low-wage jobs (disportionately women and people of color) experienced massive layoffs and may not have recovered. The General Social Survey, an annual nationally representative survey conducted by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago, asked respondents about their financial circumstances in 2022 compared to before the pandemic: "Thinking about the income of your household before the COVID-19 pandemic compared with now, would you say it has increased, decreased or stayed about the same?’. This study would assess the proportion of respondents who reported decreased income, both overall and by population sub-group. This study is very publishable as it focuses on the financial consequences of COVID.
