Bio

I am a third-year graduate student studying Oceanography at the University of Washington in Seattle. Growing up in New England, I attribute my love of the ocean to my family’s annual camping trips to Acadia National Park, Maine. As an undergraduate, I fostered my passion for the ocean by pursing a dual degree program in Chemistry and Environmental Studies at Amherst College in addition to Engineering at Dartmouth College. While I miss the charm of New England, I am thoroughly enjoying the leap out west and exploring a new part of the country! My current research aims to identify the primary processes that affect ocean acidification along the western US coast using coral paleoclimate records and biogeochemical models (Regional Ocean Modeling Systems, ROMS). I hope these insights will enhance our mechanistic understanding of the western US coastal waters and constrain our projections of climate change impacts in the region. For my next project, I plan to study freshwater glacial runoff in coastal Alaska as a mechanism to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Outside of research, I enjoy hiking, skiing, rock climbing, and exploring the mountains in Washington. In college, I played field hockey at Amherst College and still play in a Seattle pick up league today! At Amherst, I was also in a chorus and a cappella group. Outside of these hobbies, I enjoy spending time with my friends and family - I have three sisters (one of whom is my twin!).

The Other CO2 Problem: The Ocean’s Role in Climate Change

Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the oceans have absorbed approximately 30% of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the burning of fossil fuels. While this process removes CO2 from the atmosphere and has slowed the rise in global temperatures, the ocean’s absorption of CO2 has led to another problem - ocean acidification. Ocean acidification is a phenomenon in which the absorption of CO2 causes ocean chemistry to change and become more acidic. What are the acid/base chemical principles behind this process? How is ocean acidification impacting marine ecosystems and food sources on which millions of people rely? In what places is ocean acidification posing the largest threats?

Coral Reefs: Multiple Stressors in a Changing Ocean

While coral reefs make up less than 1% of ocean real estate, they are home to over a quarter of marine biodiversity in the ocean. Despite their importance to marine ecosystem functions and the tremendous ecosystem services they provide, coral reefs are severely threatened by climate change and other human activities. What stressors do coral reefs face today? Which studies or research offer glimmers of hope for the resilience of coral reefs? What is being done to protect coral reefs and the communities that rely on these ecosystems?

Climate Change Solutions: The Power of the Oceans

Despite efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions on a global scale, the effects of climate change can likely only be avoided through efforts to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. As governments and politicians consider solutions to minimize the harmful effects of climate change, the oceans have been proposed as a useful tool to capture and store carbon from the atmosphere. What types of ocean-based solutions exist to slow the effects of climate change? What are the pros and cons of each of these methods? What are some barriers you see for the implementation of such methods?

Teaching experience

I have served as a Teaching Assistant for three undergraduate courses (Ocean Biogeochemical Cycles at the University of Washington (UW), Climate Extremes at UW, and Thermodynamics at Dartmouth College). For both courses, I held office hours to assist students with their problem sets and held quiz sections to prepare for exams. I have also served as a mentor for the UW Graduate Application Mentorship Program (GAMP) in the Oceanography department to minimize obstacles and provide tips and guidance for students applying to graduate school. Lastly, as a part of the UW Program on Climate Change, I am leading the creation of an undergraduate branch to connect undergrads pursuing climate-related research across departments within the College of the Environment. I have enjoyed working with undergraduate students to identify barriers to accessing and navigating research experiences at the University.
